When the time is right you will know it… you will be sure. However, if you do decide to go out there, on your own so to speak, especially for the first time and to an unknown area then I highly suggest that you get a rommate or better yet sublet a room from someone that is in the area. Most of the time people want total freedom (from their families and past) and a new start so they decide that they will get an apartment of their own and that with a job that they will be fine. They forget about the extra living costs, and the emotional side, and the adjustment to all that is changing in their lives. It is overwhelming at first. For these reasons most end up moving back home again before they can be on their own (again), & for good. And, it sounds to me that you are not even out of the house yet and you are already overwelmed with the prospects of what I just mentioned (and what you did too). Go to craigslist.com website or read ads and see if you can’t get an apartment to share. You will have a friend, someone to help you get to know your new area, and not as much burden (financial or emotional) weighing you down than if you try to “do it alone”. After a few – 6 months maybe- if you feel that you can handle more (fiancially and emotionally) by yourself, then I would suggest you get a place by yourself. But I wouldn’t “throw myself into the sea and hope to swim not sink.” I thiink living with a roomate first will give you an idea of what it takes to make it on your own… a stepping stone to not only get you on your own but able to become fully independent. Just fyi, renting by yourself vs a roommate costs about 2-3 times more in most cities, not to mention that you only get to socialize if you put in the effort and money to go out. Roomates are live-in buddies. Most people I knew that tried to get their own place had to hold down a few jobs, but those with roommates shared the costs and everything. They seemed alot more happy all around.
