Q&A: Sedation Gynecologist for PTSD?
Question by Natasha: Sedation Gynecologist for PTSD?
TRIGGER
I’d like to know if there is such thing as Sedation Gynecology (like there is Sedation Dentistry), and if possible where I could find a doctor who practices it (I live in Colorado).
I have disabling PTSD from sexual trauma when I was younger, and even the thought of seeing a GYN and having anyone touch me like that triggers a panic attack. I can hardly type right now, I’m shaking so much (recovering from a panic attack spurred by thinking of this…)
My psychiatrist told me that even though I really should go, I shouldn’t push myself or I will most likely be re-traumatized. She asked me if there was a reason I personally think I should go, and I lied and told her no. The truth is, I know I need to go see a GYN. Not only for simple health reasons, but because for the past few years I’ve had a lot of lower abdominal pain on and off (not related to periods) which may be a sign something is really wrong… Avoiding it isn’t an option anymore.
Any information would be really helpful, even if it’s a doc in another state… I can travel if need be.
P.S. – Insensitive pricks need not answer. I do not need to hear that a GYN appointment is “easy”, “simple”, or that it’s “no big deal” or that I should “suck it up”. The fact of the matter is that IT IS NOT EASY or even TOLERABLE for everyone. No one needs to hear those types of comments from someone who has no knowledge of the situation.

Hi,
I have the utmost sympathy. I couldn’t imagine battling post traumatic stress disorder from sexual trauma. I have never heard of sedation gynecology. I’m not sure if it even exists. My advice to you is to talk to your psychiatrist and see if she can recommend any gynecologists that would be willing to sedate you in order to be examined, see if she’ll work with you on this issue. Lower abdominal could be something very serious, you should not hold this off much longer. Again, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this issue. You have my best wishes. I know healing from a traumatic experience can seem d*mn near impossible. With strength and determination you can overcome any mountain. Good luck to you.
