Fairfax County During the Civil War (Part 2)

The Fairfax County History Commission produced this Civil War video with the help of Fairfax County’s Channel 16 with the goal of telling Fairfax County’s Civil War story. Fairfax County, Virginia found itself in the crossroads of the Confederate and Union armies early in the war. The first skirmish of the Civil War took place here at Fairfax Court House and was followed by the Battle of Vienna, which was the first time a train was used in warfare. The Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run took place soon after with the advancing Union army marching through Fairfax County on its way to Manassas. In October 1861 Jefferson Davis came to Fairfax Court House to review his troops and a little over a month later Abraham Lincoln came to Fairfax County to do the same. The winter of 1861-62 saw the Confederate Army make Centreville its home and Confederate General JEB Stuart engaged Union General Ord in the Battle of the Hay Wagons in Dranesville.

A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia: The Civil War Album of Laura Ratcliffe (The History Press)
A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia: The Civil War Album of Laura Ratcliffe (The History Press)
As the Civil War raged, Confederate brigadier general J.E.B. Stuart entrusted a secret album to Laura Ratcliffe, a young girl in Fairfax County, 'as a token of his high appreciation of her patriotism, admiration of her virtues, and pledge of his lasting esteem.' A devoted Southerner, Laura provided a safe haven for Rebel forces, along with intelligence gathered from passing Union soldiers. Ratcliffe's book contains four poems and forty undated signatures: twenty-six of Confederate officers and soldiers and fourteen of loyal Confederate civilians. In A Southern Spy in Northern Virginia, Charles V. Mauro uncovers the mystery behind this album, identifying who the soldiers were and when they could have signed its pages. The result is a fascinating look at the covert lives and relationships of civilians and soldiers during the war, kept hidden until now.

Brown's Battleground: Students, Segregationists, and the Struggle for Justice in Prince Edward County, Virginia
When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, Prince Edward County, Virginia, home to one of the five cases combined by the Court under Brown, abolished its public school system rather than integrate. Jill Titus situates the crisis in Prince Edward County within the seismic changes brought by Brown and Virginia's decision to resist desegregation. While school districts across the South temporarily closed a building here or there to block a specific desegregation order, only in Prince Edward did local authorities abandon public education entirely--and with every intention of permanence. When the public schools finally reopened after five years of struggle--under direct order of the Supreme Court--county authorities employed every weapon in their arsenal to ensure that the newly reopened system remained segregated, impoverished, and academically substandard. Intertwining educational and children's history with the history of the black freedom struggle, Titus draws on little-known archival sources and new interviews to reveal the ways that ordinary people, black and white, battled, and continue to battle, over the role of public education in the United States.

Policing for Profit – The Abuse of Civil Asset Forfeiture
Learn more at www.ij.org Civil forfeiture laws represent one of the most serious assaults on private property rights in the nation today. With civil forfeiture, police and prosecutors can seize your property and use it to fund their budgets—all without charging you with a crime. Americans are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but with civil forfeiture, your property is guilty until you prove it innocent—and law enforcement has a huge incentive to police for profit, not justice. If police suspect that you committed a crime, they can arrest you and put you on trial. At that trial, prosecutors must prove you are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But if police suspect your car was involved in a crime, they can take it, sell it and, in most places, pocket the proceeds to pad their budgets. They need not prove you committed any crime—or even arrest you—to take your property away. Welcome to the upside-down world of civil asset forfeiture. With civil forfeiture, your property is guilty until you prove it innocent to get it back. And because most state and federal laws allow police and prosecutors to pocket the proceeds, they have a big incentive to pursue profits, not justice. How big? In 1986, the Justice Departments forfeiture fund took in 94 million dollars. Now it has more than a billion. State and local agencies receive forfeiture funds, too—but we don’t know how much because most states don’t publicly report on forfeiture. No surprise—abuse is rampant. One New …

Stop Discrimination And Other Civil Rights Infringement With A San Diego Attorney
Article by San Diego Civil Rights Attorney
A San Diego civil rights attorney may be the choice for you if your civil rights have been violated. All American citizens are guaranteed the same rights, according to the law. It is sometimes necessary to be represented by an attorney in order to ensure that these rights are upheld.
Without a legal system in place to see to it that people are treated fairly, many more people would have to deal with wrongful termination of employment, without any recourse. There are many people who have been fired from their jobs for reason such as needing time off for medical procedures, complaining about sexual harassment, and racial discrimination. None of these reasons qualify within the U.S. legal system as acceptable reasons for termination. Fortunately for these people, San Diego civil rights attorneys are available to help them keep their jobs and be treated fairly.
Religious freedom is another factor that can lead to discrimination. Under the Bill of Rights in the American Constitution, citizens are guaranteed the right to religious freedom, which includes the right to congregate and worship or perform religious practices (as long as they don
