Can you purchase proscription ‘wacky’ contacts from eye-doctors?
Question by Evan: Can you purchase proscription ‘wacky’ contacts from eye-doctors?
I’m going to get contacts for my birthday, because I’m sick of wearing glasses. In the past, I’ve seen some contacts that can make your iris red colored, cat-eyes, completely black, completely white, etc. Can you get these for every day purposes of contacts, or are they not for proscriptional purposes?

Lenses like those can’t be worn like regular lenses are.
They don’t provide very good vision to start because the clear center slides around usually creating shadows in front of the pupil. Also, at night time when the pupils dilate a bit, you see the edge of the colored ring and that is annoying, like having tunnel vision.
Also, those are theatrical lenses, meant to be worn for short periods only because they are lousy at transmitting oxygen to the cornea. They are meant as a novelty , not full time wear. Which is why you have probably never seen anyone walking around with them on.
Lenses like those can’t even be prescribed because we can’t get samples of them to use as a trial lens to see the fit. They aren’t FDA or Health Canada approved either meaning they can’t be sold in the US. or Canada. You can only get them by internet from foreign countries.

I am not going to tell you that your eyes will fall out if you wear theses contacts. I can tell you that whoever sold them to you violated federal law. Being willing to violate federal law for $ 20 would put them in the category: People you do not want to trust your eyes to.

Colored contacts for kids 14 years old non-prescription in the USA?
Question by what?: Colored contacts for kids 14 years old non-prescription in the USA?
My daughter who is 14 and in 8th grade wants colored contacts without a prescription in southern California. There is a store at our mall selling them to kids without any questions being asked. I have read many online articles that say you still need to be measured for even a non-prescription pair of colored contacts and that in the USA it is illegal to sell or buy them without a doctor’s prescription for the correct nonprescription measurements. Has any laws changed, now making the eye exam and prescription no longer necessary? My insurance does NOT cover contact exams and I can not afford to pay for one. She only wants them for Christmas and will only use them short term she says. Is the store at the mall selling them for $ 15 doing so in a legal way? Should I worry, or just get them and the cleaning solution and case? The ones at the mall store do say FDA approved on them.

Definitely go to a doctor. I have bad eyes, but I do wear contacts and my doctor had to find a pair based on the shape of my eye, etc. So, not everyone has the same shaped eye. The store is obviously not selling them the right way. Go somewhere reliable. Even if it won’t be cheap, your daughter’s eyes won’t be ruined.

I’ll try and shed some light on this for you.
It is illegal for anyone who is not a licensed eyecare provider to sell contact lenses. It isn’t illegal to buy them.
The laws haven’t changed, but it is a law with no teeth until a complaint is made. Beauty shops, hairdressers, flea markets , get a hold of them from illegal sources, probably not even aware they are not allowed to sell them…or just don’t care.
The sources are a mystery…could be sales reps from some companies making extra bucks on the side…or optical stores who are buying them as secret suppliers.
Even though the lenses say they are FDA approved doesn’t make them any safer when they are misused. They are approved lenses because a black market is supplying the real product to illegal sellers. In many cases they are the national brands.
The problems arise because contact lenses can do a lot of damage to a human cornea . Contacts aren’t a one size fits all , even though most of the color lenses only come in one curvature , doesn’t mean it will fit everyone. They are made in the most common curvature which usually will fit maybe 7 out of 10 with no major problem.
Lenses that fit too tight can cause swelling of the cornea among other problems. Lenses that fit too loose can even cause a corneal ulcer, which is very painful. Over wearing lenses can cause a myriad of other long term problems.
Kids who buy those lenses from illegal sources aren’t being checked first to make sure the cornea is healthy enough to even wear contacts. They don’t know if the curvature is right, and even endure discomfort with them just to look “cool ‘…discomfort with contacts is never a good sign.
They don’t know how to take care of them and infections from them are rampant.
It is a major problem in the US…not so bad in Canada. We have inspectors who visit malls and flea markets fairly often to find offenders and they get a $ 2500.00 fine.
The sheer number of possible outlets in the US makes it a lot harder to control I guess.
Many can wear them short term as your daughter wants with no problems…but many DO end up with problems.
If you take part in making sure she stays safe with them , her chances will be a lot better.
The right kind of cleaning solution , the right hygiene practices , the proper wearing time…ect…and making sure that if her eyes get red or irritated while wearing them…she takes them off….and throws them away.
It’s a very silly and potentially dangerous fad the kids are in to with those color lenses.
